Valle Seco ‘Mi Prima Vera’
Valle Seco is a project from ranchers turned winemakers - Federico Lencioni and Francisco Sarabia who took a parcel of their sprawling ranch and devoted it to grape growing in 2009. And it was when they teamed up with Argentinian winemaker and enologist Sergio Heras in 2018 that the fun began. Since then, the Valle Seco winemaking style has been honed and their grapes continue to stand out in their quality and consistency.
Just 18 miles from the Pacific, the plot they chose is ideal for growing grapes. With a layer of fog that rolls in through the evening and settles until the morning, and a consistent breeze that keeps air moving through the vines. It lies in a high elevation valley within the Baja Norte mountains that’s largely decomposed granite, sand, and clay soils. Their vineyards stand out among golden grasses in a highland plain like a total oasis. An oasis where you’ll find this Cabernet Sauvignon that’ll blow you away and give you a whole new perspective of what Cabs can taste like.
‘Prima Vera’ is made in a very small batch, only 150 cases made. Grapes are picked and selected in the night in order to maintain an ideal level of acidity. The juice is moved to stainless steel tanks, with the skins and seeds, to ferment for about 3 weeks. Some whole grape clusters are thrown in to add a carbonic maceration crunchiness and depth to the wine. The wine is racked, then held in stainless for another 4 months before being bottled. What results is a young, super drinkable Cab that’s brimming with energy.
