Domaine des Pothiers 'Colline en Flamme'
This could be a story of tradition and family with intrigue and wars but really it’s the story of a family who has been in the farming world for many, many generations. And while there is intrigue and wars plus tradition etc. etc., there is also a pretty awesome family making wine the way they’ve done for generations. Plus farming and raising cattle….
Cliff notes - Blaise Pothiers inherited the family farm complete with vines, garden & cattle. Great War aka WW1 breaks out and he goes off to fight ultimately losing his life. Only surviving heir is his sister, Claude, who’s husband survived the war. They take over running the family biz and the farm is passed on until finally, the grandson inherits. Romain is keen to learn and to grow biodynamically thus must be convinced to come back home and when he does, the family farm / vineyard converts to biodynamics and naturally-made wines!! Soooooo - at the risk of condensing too much, that begins the story of this current rendition of Domaine des Pothiers! Also he’s a pretty awesome fella and so is the entire family!!
And now on this wine —-
‘La Colline en Flamme’ means hill on fire & quite frankly, this wine is fire!!!!!! This wine makes me want to “Gamay All Day”! Think ripe raspberries with hints of plum and black cherry - spice and some hints of smoke dance along side the brighter red fruits. The well-tuned structure and raspberry acidity balanced the silky, yet delicate tannins!
