Domaine de Beudon

Did you know that some of the highest vineyards in the world exist in Switzerland? Valais in fact & OMG! The wines from Domaine de Beudon continue to rock my world! We talked about one of the wines from this magical place a few years back and my crush on all things Beudon has not faded! And when I opened a bottle of the 2007 white followed by one of the l’orage wines, my way-up-a-mountain crushing-hard came flooding back and since a once in a lifetime opportunity to taste them all is tuesday and wednesday (May 3-4), I had to share with you all immediately!

With vineyards clinging to the side of a mountain 900 meters above sea level in the Valais region of Switzerland, vineyard management is also an extreme sport. To get to the vineyards and the winery, you can either climb steadily for 3 hours, holding on to rope railings as you wind your way up and up, or you can ride the vineyard’s charmingly rustic cable car. Either way, once you’re up, you’re way way up there— just you, the grapes, and the clouds— almost close enough to touch.

Jacques converted the Domaine de Beudon estate to biodynamics in the 1970s (the first to do so in Switzerland), and though he has since passed away, his wife and daughters continue to adapt to the wildness of this region. The reds are picked and pressed on the mountainside, placed in steel tanks, and hauled down on steel cables, where the fermentation occurs. It’s a perfect blend of place mixed with the tender force of Jaques’s spirit that makes Domaine de Beudon an absolute treasure!
