Domaine Calvez-Bobinet ‘Poil de Lievre’

It’s back and it is BOMB!! Domaine Calvez-Bobinet ‘Poil de Lievre’ Chenin Blanc and just in time for spring with that cute label! From younger vines that are planted in limestone soils outside Saumur - of course, 100% biodynamic with native yeast etc etc
(if you’re reading this, you probably know my vibes already but if not, click here!).

Picked earlier than some of their other vineyards, the Poil de Lievre is so freaking fresh and so freaking good! Textured, balanced with a zippy acidity that is like eating a green apple just after you’ve eaten a ripe pear! Not jokin, friends! And can we talk about the lingering finish?! Like a pineapple, mango colada while sitting on a beach but with a minerality streak that is both creamy and tart leaving you wanting another sip IMMEDIATELY. Also I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the aromatics coming out of the glass! With a swirl, there is a spring meadow vibe and a hint of flowers - almost got nervous it would come off a bit sweet but then that sip …. And oh HELL YEA! No sweetness here - just all yummy!

Geek-out moment:: Hand picked chenin directly pressed then fermented in stainless with a bit of aging on the lees (see previous info about lees or swing on by and ask!). Bottled without filtration so can be a bit cloudy. SOOOO FREAKING GOOD!!

Sebastien is a 7th generation winemaker, who added his wife's name to the family domain. Their nod to acknowledge the huge role Eméline played in the conversion of their vineyards to organics/biodynamics.

More geeky info:::: Saumur Champigny sits on a large shelf of chalk with limestone which is really important - especially with Chenin imo. Chalky-limestone soils aid with water retention in the warmer months plus it reflects light in the cooler months to keep those vine babies (aka grapes) all happy. Perhaps most importantly, this type of soil lends a chalky minerality to the Chenin keeping it from getting too unctuous or flabby.

that was a lot of geeking out! sorry, friends!! trust me when i say - this is so freaking good and you should drink this asap!!
