Delphine & Sebastien Boisseau/La Vigne Mouton ‘Ratatouille’
La Vigne Mouton is the result of decades of hard work and outside-the-box thinking from Sebastien and Delphine Boisseau. Their old vines live on 7.5 hectares in Bray (a tiny village known for its notable winemaking) which is in one of the classic wine regions of the world - Burgundy!! This part of France has some of the most stringent appellation laws and it’s a place where one doesn’t simply buck tradition and eschew the way of doing things. But after his father fell ill from exposure to pesticides, Sebastien Boisseau (who had taken over the family plots) turned away from the use of chemicals in the vineyard and cellar and converted to strict organic/ biodynamic farming. Alongside wife Delphine, they have been finding their way and discovering the joy of making natural wine! They formed La Vigne Mouton in 2012 as a way to stand apart from the family business and have been a delicious addition to our shelves since we discovered them (thanks, Seth!).
Of course, I think all wines have a place in all seasons…there’s something about Gamay that is so quintessentially fall… give it to me during November when all the city is dark, gloomy but twinkly with the coming holidays and YES YES YES!!
Despite what the back label says, this is actually mostly Gamay, with a little Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrown in there. These grapes are co-fermented rather than all fermented separately and blended at the end. A combination that is at once unique and so of this awesome couple - all their notable varietals in one place.
‘Ratatouille’ is a bright and juicy - a perfectly crunchy-red-fruit bottle that’s got a little bit of light spice in the end. All that fresh plum with hints of cherry and a floral, rose/hibiscus nose. I love that it’s got so much going on and it’s complex but it’s not too heavy. It stays pretty light on its feet and is so drinkable!
Yet another very small production, so grab a bottle while you can!
