Birdhorse ‘Borden Ranch’ Verdelho
Who doesn’t love a love story? Corinne & Katie met, fell in love & began life together while getting master’s degrees at UC Davis. As Katie says, they are now “partners in ….. well, everything”
Their project is Birdhorse wines and in their own words, this project “represents a vision for the future of California winemaking, a vision anchored in a passion for diversification. We strive to showcase regions, varietals, and humans that have long had a presence in this industry, but have yet to been celebrated by many of its constituents. We are driven by intellectual curiosity, transparency, science, and data, but most importantly an ardor for delicious wines and sharing them with the wider drinking public.”
All this while holding down day jobs as assistant winemakers so one could say, these ladies are BUSY!! We are so excited about Birdhorse & can’t wait to share this little gem with you!
The Verdelho is grown in the Borden Ranch AVA of Lodi, California and farmed by Markus Bokisch - (a passionate advocate and farmer of Iberian varieties in CA). Lodi has a fairly intense climate, with hot hot summers - add 25+ year-old vines and clay-loamy soil and you’ve got some amazing grapes! It’s bursting out of the glass with fresh and slightly tropical fruits - passionfruit and markrut lime! Maybe even some slightly underripe pineapple. Definitely pomelo and meyer lemon with a gorgeous structure of wet stones and chalky minerality that balances all that gorgeous fruit!
