Alvaro Gonzalez Marcos 'Big Jet Plane'
This week’s Wine Crush is Álvaro González Marcos 'Big Jet Plane' 2019 from Catalonia, Spain.
A perfect red for the rapidly shifting weather, Álvaro González Marcos’s Big Jet Plane is bright, lively, and juicy enough to let dribble down your chin. (Though you’re not going to want to waste a drop, I promise.) With a hint of effervescence, it’s a truly WILD wine that tastes like no other red you’ve had. Think bright red cherries and elderberries, hints of violet, and an acidity that lingers.
These Ull de Llebre grapes (the Catalonian name for Tempranillo) are picked early in the season to maintain strong acidity and then macerated on the skins for three days. Fermented and aged in stainless steel before bottling with no filtration or clarification. Marcos, who began farming in 2013, practices organic and biodynamic farming, and everything is harvested in small batches by hand.
Pair with a sunny day that turns into a hailstorm and then back to blue skies. With no sulfur added at bottling, it’s meant to be consumed quickly (no, you don’t need to chug it, just over the course of an evening) making it a perfect bottle for that next spring-to-winter-to-summer-again outdoor evening.
