thoughts on endings and change
I struggle with the words - the right way to say what has to be said. No one starts a small, brick & mortar spot thinking “who cares if it works” - we do it cuz we believe! We want to share our dreams with our community - maybe we’re a little crazy? Scratch that - we are definitely crazy! Let’s get real - the odds of a small business succeeding are very, very low. Even with family money or a partner who has a “real job” or an investor, this is expensive & soul-sucking. It is also liberating, amazing and absolutely incredible! WHEN IT WORKS, even better! Sometimes it does - sometimes it doesn’t. The city of Seattle doesn’t make it easy!!
When I opened Molly’s with a credit card and faith, I was absolutely terrified. The community of Sunset Hill and surrounding areas showed up. Support and love flowed - so much that even during the pandemic, we survived. Not a day went by that I didn’t absolutely marvel with immense gratitude at the incredible community. Friends were made - babies & dogs abounded. There were really great times and some scary ones too. And the first natural wine shop in Seattle, I was and remain! super proud of this shop and this community.
tbh, as a small business owner with no investors, it is really hard to make the financial ends meet. And the sad truth is that MoRa closing keeps Molly’s afloat. So we are closing MoRa as day-to-day wine bar - we will be an event space until the landlords find another tenant. I believe that Roosevelt will be a vibrant neighborhood in the future but the current economic environment combined with the unhoused situation & lack of business makes it impossible for MoRa to remain open.
The landlords are really great & the rent is good - a combo that is rare in Seattle! sooooo if you know anyone looking for a space……
For me, I am deeply gutted to be forced to make this decision.
Come see me at Molly’s - grab a glass and we can pontificate about the state of things - LOL! or we can just giggle and catch up over a glass!!
